Wikipedia Co-founder Sparks Debate: Bank Passwords vs. Bitcoin Wallets

Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, used X (formerly Twitter) on December 11 to criticize Bitcoin, boasting about his ability to remember his bank password while highlighting that users often lose access to their Bitcoin due to forgotten wallet passwords. This commentary from Wales received pushback from the broader Bitcoin and cryptocurrency community, which countered his remarks by pointing out Wikipedia’s reliance on donations for daily operations.

On X, Wales sarcastically recounted a scenario where he pretended to forget his bank password and lose all his cash before quipping that this didn’t happen because banks function, unlike Bitcoin, according to him. This drew criticism from the BTC community, which accused him of an unwarranted attack on Bitcoin. They reminded Wales that although banks may function, they are not universally accessible, leaving many people worldwide without banking services.

Alex Gladstein, the chief strategy officer at the Human Rights Foundation, mentioned that banks operate well in countries with strong legal frameworks and stable currencies, highlighting that only about one billion out of the world’s eight billion people have access to banking services.

Lyn Alden, the founder of Lyn Alden Investment Strategy, added that even those with bank accounts aren’t always secure, citing the example of a Lebanese doctor who lost a significant portion of their savings due to hyperinflation.

Danny Scott, CEO of Bitcoin exchange Coin Corner, argued that Wales was comparing two dissimilar things. He suggested that a closer comparison would be a user forgetting a password to a Bitcoin exchange, which can be reset, similar to a bank. Scott further explained that if physical cash is lost, it’s irretrievable, much like Bitcoin.
