Whale Investor’s $150 Million ETH Options Buying Spree Shakes Up Crypto Market

The ETH market has witnessed a surge in activity thanks to a high-capital investor, commonly referred to as a whale, engaging in substantial call options trading.

Over the last 24 hours, this whale has acquired almost 92,600 ETH call option contracts valued at $150 million on the cryptocurrency exchange Deribit, as per data from options tracking website Greeks.Live. Each option contract on Deribit corresponds to 1 ETH. Greeks.Live tweeted about this development, stating,” The whale has actively invested $150 million in notional ETH call options, and all of these were uncovered purchases, indicating a clear bullish outlook for the long term.”

Call options grant the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to purchase the underlying asset at a predetermined price on a future date. A call buyer typically expresses optimism about the market’s direction. An uncovered position is speculative and lacks protection against adverse price movements in the underlying asset.

This substantial trading activity primarily focused on out-of-the-money (OTM) call options, with strike prices significantly above the current market value of Ether, which stands at $1,633. Whales purchased over 40,000 ETH December expiry call contracts at a strike price of $2,200 and nearly 50,000 contracts with an October expiry date at a strike price of $2,000. These trades were conducted as block transactions, which involve large negotiations conducted outside of the exchange’s order book to minimize their impact on the asset’s market price. Block trades are often viewed as a proxy for institutional participation in the market.

Ether experienced a notable decline, reaching a six-month low of $1,532 the previous week, as traders assessed the potential impact of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange holding multibillion-dollar digital assets, potentially liquidating its assets due to financial difficulties.
