The Celestia network is set to integrate with Polygon’s chain development kit (CDK) in the early months of the upcoming year, as announced on December 11. This integration aims to offer an easily implementable component to enable Polygon-based networks to utilize Celestia for data availability, potentially slashing transaction fees by over 100 times if these networks choose to store compressed transaction data on Celestia rather than Ethereum. The impending integration in early 2024 is poised to streamline this choice by embedding the option directly within the Polygon CDK software.
Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal likened this move to a pivotal moment for Web3, stating, “This is the broadband moment for Web3. The ability to launch a high-throughput ZK-powered Ethereum layer 2 as easily as deploying a smart contract will do for blockchain adoption what high-speed fiber did for Web2 applications.”
The Polygon CDK software empowers developers to forge new blockchain networks within the wider Polygon ecosystem. Notably, it’s already in use by platforms like OKX, Astar, Canto, Gnosis Pay, Palm, and IDEX, according to the announcement. Within the realm of Polygon-based networks, some, like Polygon zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine, function as “rollups,” storing transaction data directly on the Ethereum network. Others, known as “validiums,” keep validation proofs on Ethereum while housing the compressed transaction data on a separate network. Celestia stands as one such network, while Avail is another option for storing transaction data within validiums.
