UK Expands National Crime Agency with Six Crypto Investigators

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is taking proactive measures to combat the growing threat of crypto-related scams by establishing a dedicated cryptocurrency and digital assets team. They posted a job opening on November 4, seeking to hire six individuals to create this new team, which will focus on investigating crypto crimes.

These investigators will play a crucial role in supporting both existing and new investigations where specialized cryptocurrency expertise is required. Their responsibilities will include providing strategic and tactical advice for crypto investigations, conducting blockchain forensic analyses, and scrutinizing various materials for evidence.

While the NCA’s intent to form this team is clear in response to the escalating cyber threats in the crypto space, the agency has not yet responded to inquiries. This initiative aligns with the U.K.’s broader goal of becoming a crypto hub by fostering a regulated environment that supports the crypto ecosystem instead of penalizing users.

Notably, in August 2023, Coinbase confirmed its commitment to the U.K. and Europe amid introducing the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. The U.K. is recognized as one of the fastest-growing user markets for Coinbase, highlighting the region’s readiness for significant changes in how it utilizes and perceives digital currency in the evolving digital economy.
