The crypto community has rallied to aid the Maui community, as a relief fund initiated by A-list celebrities Oprah Winfrey and The Rock now accepts cryptocurrency donations. The People’s Fund of Maui is open to receiving donations in various fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies. Alongside fiat donations from across the globe, the fund also welcomes contributions in Bitcoin, Ether, Dogecoin, and numerous other digital currencies
In early August 2023, a wildfire outbreak wreaked havoc on Maui, resulting in extensive property damage and personal losses, with over 2,500 acres consumed by flames. Responding to this crisis, The Rock and Oprah launched the People’s Fund of Maui, which aims to provide direct financial assistance to those affected by this catastrophe.
The Rock affirmed in a tweet that 100% of the donations would be directed to the victims and announced, “Every adult resident who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula is eligible to receive $1200 per month to help them through this period of recovery.” Oprah explained that the primary objective of delivering donations directly to survivors is to empower them to make decisions regarding their path to recovery.
In parallel with the efforts of A-list celebrities, numerous relief initiatives are striving to assist wildfire victims. The disaster relief organization All Hands and Hearts has been actively collecting cryptocurrency and fiat donations to aid local Maui residents in the aftermath of the fires.
Olga Ruggiero, Chief of Organizational Integration and Events at All Hands and Hearts, noted, “Cryptocurrency donations, as any other type of donation, are helping to provide essential support after the devastating wildfires. The crypto industry continues to band together with communities around the world in need.”
