Surreal Athens: Architect Harnesses AI to Blend Past, Present, and Future

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the creative landscape, offering new avenues for artists to visualize and interpret the world. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, and OpenAI have recently rolled out advanced AI tools, including video and image generators and powerful text-to-image capabilities, respectively.

As AI development accelerates, artists are grappling with the challenge of integrating these tools into their creative processes while maintaining their unique vision. New York-based Greek architect Tina Marinaki is one such artist who has embraced AI, creating the “Athens Surreal” online community on Instagram, where she reimagines the ancient Athenian cityscape using AI tools.

Marinaki’s project aims to understand how various AI tools work while exploring ideas for a different, sometimes romantic, and utopian future for Athens. However, she highlights the challenges of working with text-to-image AI systems, emphasizing the importance of carefully choosing words to communicate a vision. Additionally, she points out algorithmic biases, such as gender or ethnicity, that can manifest in AI-generated images.

Despite these challenges, Marinaki sees the potential for AI to contribute significantly to data optimization in the construction sector by suggesting ideal parameters based on project data. She believes that, when trained correctly, AI can overcome its biases and become a valuable tool in architectural design.

Marinaki emphasizes the role of human imagination in machine creation, asserting that her knowledge of Athens and Greek culture guides the AI tools to interpret and recreate the essence of the city accurately. While her reimagined Athens receives positive feedback from her Greek followers, the question of whether machines can accurately translate cultural essence remains.

For Marinaki, technology’s advancements serve as a tool to preserve and recreate traces of the past. She advocates for a healthy relationship with AI and the development of regulatory frameworks to address issues such as propaganda, fake news, intellectual property concerns, and algorithmic bias.

The Greek government seems to share Marinaki’s perspective, having established an AI advisory committee in October to formulate a national strategy for dealing with the technology. Marinaki concludes that only through such measures can artificial intelligence become a powerful and cutting-edge technology tool, shaping a harmonious coexistence between human creativity and machine capabilities.
