Robert F. Kennedy Jr Vows to Halt US CBDC Initiative

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the first presidential candidate to accept Bitcoin for campaign donations, aligns with Donald Trump in opposing the development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in the United States. On Jan. 24, Kennedy shared a video fragment discussing the perceived threats of a CBDC, emphasizing privacy concerns. He argued that a CBDC would enable the government to monitor every citizen’s transaction, potentially leading to blackmail or pressure, and added:

“It [a CBDC] is a calamity for human rights and for civil rights.”

Drawing on the example of China’s digital yuan, linked to a social credit system, Kennedy highlighted the risk of government control over individual funds based on surveillance data.

Kennedy pledged to halt the move toward a CBDC if elected president and expressed a commitment to preserving the use of paper cash. Despite his concerns about government intrusion, he acknowledged Bitcoin’s superior protection compared to physical currency. Donald Trump, another presidential candidate, has also voiced strong opposition to a CBDC in the U.S., aligning with Kennedy’s stance. While Trump had made critical remarks about Bitcoin during his presidency, other Republican candidates like Vivek Ramaswamy and Ron DeSantis have taken pro-crypto, anti-CBDC positions in their campaigns.

Having left the Democratic Party in October 2023, Kennedy is navigating the challenges of securing ballot access as an independent candidate. In January 2024, he expressed openness to running as a Libertarian Party candidate, continuing his advocacy for privacy and resisting the transition to a CBDC.
