Qatar Denies Rumors of Massive Bitcoin Purchase

Shadi Qishta, a local finance executive, refuted rumors circulating on social media about the Qatar Investment Authority’s (QIA) major Bitcoin buy in an interview with Cointelegraph.

Unlikely Investment Scenario

The rumor, started by Bitcoin aficionados on X (previously Twitter), stated that Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund was planning to inject a whopping $500 billion into Bitcoin. However, Qishta downplayed the possibility of such a shift, citing QIA’s diverse investing style and risk management policy.

“I don’t think it will happen in one way or another any time soon since the QIA has a diverse investment strategy and speeding investments across various asset classes, sectors and geographies to mitigate risk and capture opportunities in different markets and industries.”

QIA’s Investment Strategy and Cryptocurrency Stance

As a sovereign wealth fund, QIA’s investment decisions are subject to strict scrutiny and must be consistent with the strategy established by its Board and the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment (SCEAI). Furthermore, QIA CEO Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al-Mahmoud has already stated that he is more interested in blockchain technology than cryptocurrency.

Qatar’s Cryptocurrency Landscape

Despite being one of the world’s wealthiest nations, Qatar takes a cautious approach to cryptocurrency. Regulatory monitoring remains strict, with cryptocurrency trading prohibited since 2018. Qishta cited legislative uncertainties, cultural norms, and a predilection for traditional banking systems as obstacles to widespread adoption of digital assets in the country.

While Qatar’s economic expansion is expected to continue, Qishta’s views indicate that cryptocurrency investment is unlikely to be a component of its financial plan in the near future.
