Pixelverse announced on July 16 that “Pudgy,” the face of the popular Pudgy Penguins NFT collection, will become a playable character in their Telegram mini-game.
This character will join other crypto icons like Dogecoin’s Doge and Solana memecoin’s Mew. The integration precedes the official launch of the Pudgy Penguins game, slated for 2025.
NFT Market Slumps in Q2 2024
A 45% decrease in NFT sales volume was observed in the second quarter of 2024 compared to Q1. A digital collection data tracker called CryptoSlam reported that the volume fell from $4.1 billion in Q1 to $2.24 billion in Q2, marking it as the lowest quarter for NFTs since Q3 2023.
Despite this downturn, some industry experts view it as a market correction. Anoir Houmou, founder and CEO of RECRD, a Sui-backed video engagement platform, suggested that these trends indicate market maturation following recent years of explosive growth.
Pixelverse and Pudgy Penguins: Web3 Gaming Leaders
Even with declining NFT sales, Pixelverse and Pudgy Penguins remain prominent in Web3 gaming and NFTs. PixelTap, Pixelverse’s Telegram mini-game, reportedly attracted over 50 million users within its first month.
Kori Leon, Pixelverse’s co-founder, emphasized the importance of community-building in Web3 projects, stating:
“Over the years, we’ve witnessed the rise of numerous infrastructure projects that started with grand promises but failed to attract users beyond the Web3 community. For the ecosystem to thrive, it is crucial for projects to focus on what makes them successful: community, culture and distribution.”
Kori Leon, Pixelverse’s co-founder
Leon warned that projects neglecting these aspects might struggle in future cycles, noting that users are “weary of empty promises” from founders who haven’t delivered on their visions.
Pudgy Penguins: Consistent Success Amid Market Slump
The popularity of the Pudgy Penguins NFT collection has been maintained despite troublesome market conditions. An all-time sales volume of nearly $400 million for the collection was reported by CryptoSlam. In the past month alone, it led Ethereum-based NFTs with $12 million in sales.
In May, Pudgy Penguins CEO Luca Schnetzler claimed that the collection had sold one million plushies based on the NFT designs in stores worldwide.
