OpenSea’s Former Employee Linked to $60M AnubisDAO Rug Pull – A Crypto Mystery in Miami

A former OpenSea staff member faces allegations of involvement in the 2021 AnubisDAO rug pull, but skepticism surrounds these claims. OpenSea, a nonfungible token (NFT) platform, has publicly stated that it is unaware of any links between one of its former employees and the AnubisDAO rug pull, a controversial incident that occurred in 2021, following recent accusations on social media.

On October 6, an anonymous account called NFT Ethics initiated a discussion on X, tagging OpenSea to address the allegations against their former head of ventures, Kevin Pawlak. NFT Ethics suggested that Pawlak may be associated with the pseudonymous identity “0xSisyphus” and had participated in “various dubious business dealings”

NFT Ethics and the blockchain analytics account Lookonchain alleged that 0xSisyphus, and by extension, Pawlak, played a significant role in promoting the AnubisDAO project to investors. This promotion occurred just before the project moved the funds it had raised to various external wallets.

The thread by NFT Ethics contended that Pawlak’s alleged involvement in the AnubisDAO rug pull was premeditated, involving other developers, and the ill-gotten gains were funneled through the memecoin Pepe (PEPE).

However, OpenSea responded, indicating that they had no knowledge of Pawlak’s involvement in such activities. They also pointed out that Pawlak held a limited role during his time at the company, working in a non-management position.

“Kevin is a former employee who left the company in June of 2023. He had a limited scope while at OpenSea, working in a non-management position. We have no awareness of his involvement with the projects in question,” said the company representative.

“Furthermore, we have no connection to, or information about, the projects in question, as they took place before his time at OpenSea.”

In October 2021, AnubisDAO managed to raise a substantial sum of 13,556 ETH, valued at $60 million at the time, from cryptocurrency investors. However, within 20 hours, the funds were mysteriously transferred to multiple wallet addresses, resulting in significant losses for the investors.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT expressed skepticism about the accusations, describing the thread as “one of the most mid-curve” things he had encountered. He suggested that the thread made several assumptions about 0xSisyphus’ role in the alleged rug pull without concrete evidence.

Additionally, 0xSisyphus had previously offered a 1,000 ETH reward to anyone who could identify the wallet address responsible for the fund transfer and had engaged law enforcement agencies in the United States and Hong Kong. This further cast doubt on the new accusations.

Zach pointed out that while there may be gross negligence on 0xSisyphus’ part for providing false information about the Anubis team multisig, “[As far as I know] Sisyphus was the only team member speaking with the [Department of Homeland Security].”

In summary, allegations of an OpenSea employee’s involvement in the AnubisDAO rug pull have emerged. Still, OpenSea has distanced itself from these claims, emphasizing the employee’s limited role and lack of information about the events in question. Skepticism regarding these allegations is prevalent within the crypto community.
