OpenAI to Launch AI-Powered Search Product, Rival to Google

According to two sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI plans to announce its artificial intelligence-powered search product on Monday, intensifying its competition with search giant Google. The announcement date, although subject to change, has not been previously reported. Microsoft-backed OpenAI is working on a search product to potentially compete with Google and with Perplexity, a well-funded AI search startup.

Competition with Google and Perplexity

Industry observers anticipate the announcement to be timed a day before the start of Google’s annual I/O conference, where the tech giant is expected to unveil numerous AI-related products. OpenAI’s search product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT product, allowing ChatGPT to retrieve direct information from the web and include citations. ChatGPT, OpenAI’s chatbot product, employs advanced AI models to generate human-like responses to text prompts. While OpenAI declined to comment, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI’s search product is aimed at competing with Google’s search engine and Perplexity.

Challenges and Market Landscape

Observers have regarded ChatGPT as an alternative for gathering online information, although it has faced challenges in providing accurate and real-time data from the web. OpenAI previously integrated ChatGPT with Microsoft’s Bing for paid subscribers. Startup Perplexity, founded by a former OpenAI researcher, has garnered attention by offering an AI-native search interface displaying citations and images alongside text in its responses.

The startup boasts 10 million monthly active users, according to a January blog post. In contrast, ChatGPT experienced fluctuations in worldwide traffic over the past year, only recently returning to its peak in May 2023, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb. OpenAI faces pressure to expand its user base, following the retirement of its earlier attempt to incorporate updated and real-world information into ChatGPT, known as ChatGPT plugins, in April.
