Nokia’s Bold Vision: Meeting Soaring Network Demand in 2030 Amid Metaverse Advancements

In a bid to meet the anticipated surge in network demand fueled by advancements in the metaverse, Web3, and artificial intelligence (AI), global telecoms infrastructure firm Nokia has outlined its ambitious plans in the Technology Strategy 2030 report. The company projects a significant 22%-25% increase in network demand from 2022 to 2030, attributing the spike to the growing prevalence of generative AI and virtual reality devices.

Federico Guillén, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia, highlighted the strategic focus on developing a future network architecture that aligns with emerging market innovations. Nokia aims to address the increasing demand by heavily investing in its portfolio of network equipment and services over the next decade.

The report reveals that Nokia will cater to six ecosystems, with the Internet of Value at the forefront. This ecosystem will concentrate on decentralization, smart contracts, and blockchain. The metaverse will be a key focal point for Nokia, emphasizing human augmentation, spatial computing, and split processing.

Nokia’s commitment to metaverse exploration became evident in 2022 when it established two labs dedicated to studying metaverse technologies. The company continued its foray into this digital realm in 2023 by experimenting with industrial and wide-scale metaverse initiatives.

Utilizing network digital twin technology, Nokia has developed a future-proof network architecture. This technology involves the creation of simulations mirroring physical objects, with practical applications ranging from prototyping to testing in various industries. Notably, Nokia showcased the potential of its digital twin technology in South Australia, where a 5G-connected Microsoft HoloLens guided technicians in servicing a Cessna aircraft using augmented reality.

In a separate development, Finnish scientists experimented with “Metahumans,” digital twins designed to gamify employee management within the metaverse. These digital twins go beyond visual representation, incorporating internal traits such as emotions and cognitive states, offering a novel approach to optimizing work strategies, safety measures, and overall team performance.

Nokia’s proactive stance in embracing metaverse technologies positions the company as a key player in shaping the future of network infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of Web3, AI, and the metaverse.
