NFTs on or Off the Chain? Web3 Leaders Weigh the Storage Options

With non-fungible tokens (NFTs) exploding onto the scene, the question of where to store these digital assets has become a critical one. Both on-chain and off-chain storage offer unique advantages and drawbacks, leaving Web3 creators and executives grappling with the best choices for their creations.

In the early days, off-chain storage was the norm, with NFTs essentially acting as pointers to external data locations. However, concerns surrounding this approach surfaced during the FTX bankruptcy saga, when hosted NFTs vanished into blank slates. As Jana Bertram, head of strategy at Rari Foundation, explains, “Off-chain storage relies on network and storage layer availability, making the NFT’s security vulnerable to potential compromises.”

Then came Bitcoin Ordinals, a game-changer that enabled on-chain NFT storage on the Bitcoin blockchain. While this offered the benefit of permanence, it also triggered debate due to potential network congestion. Many argue that Ordinals clog the Bitcoin network, while others champion their place within the ecosystem.

Faced with this storage spectrum, creators must consider where their NFTs should reside. Witek Radomski, co-founder and CTO of Atlas Development, suggests weighing cost and permanence: “For handling lots of data, off-chain storage is cost-effective, while on-chain storage is like a permanent, tamper-proof vault.” He adds, “Creators should decide what deserves the vault and what can live in the cloud.”

Radomski also highlights hybrid options like Filecoin and IPFS, offering decentralized storage at lower costs than Bitcoin and emphasizing their design for data storage. “IPFS still gives you decentralization benefits with much lower costs,” he explains.

Ultimately, Jana Bertram emphasizes the importance of purpose in this decision: “An NFT representing a house title may warrant on-chain storage, whereas a brand loyalty membership NFT may find off-chain sufficiency.” Navigating the security scalability trade-off and carefully evaluating each NFT’s use case is crucial for making the right storage choice.

As the NFT landscape evolves, the debate over on-chain versus off-chain storage is likely to continue. However, by understanding the pros and cons of each approach and considering the specific purpose of each NFT, creators can ensure their digital treasures find the optimal home.
