Mistral AI Paris Based AI Startup Raises $640M

Mistral AI has concluded its much-discussed Series B funding round, successfully raising €600 million (approximately $640 million based on current exchange rates) through a combination of equity and debt financing. This round, led by General Catalyst, has significantly elevated the company’s valuation to $6 billion.

The AI startup, a relatively recent player in the artificial intelligence domain, initially garnered attention with a substantial $112 million seed funding round approximately a year ago. This influx of capital aimed to establish Mistral AI as a European contender against established AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Pioneering AI Development with Open-Source Initiatives

Founded by alumni from Meta and Google’s DeepMind, Mistral AI is dedicated to developing foundational models to rival the performance of leading models in the field, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Anthropic’s Claude 3. Notably, the company has embraced open-source principles, releasing pre-trained and fine-tuned models under the Apache 2.0 license, facilitating unrestricted use and reproduction with proper attribution.

While models like Mistral 7B and Mistral 8x22B are available under this open-source license, Mistral AI retains proprietary control over its most advanced models like Mistral Large. Codestral, the company’s generative AI model for code, operates under a restrictive license due to limitations on commercial use of its outputs.

Expansion Plans and Investor Confidence

With its latest funding round, Mistral AI is poised for expansion, bolstered by the confidence of both existing and new investors. Co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch expressed enthusiasm about the company’s continued independence and its potential to advance the frontier of AI technology.

General Catalyst, a returning investor, spearheaded the Series B round, which saw Mistral AI raising €468 million in equity and €132 million in debt. The extensive list of investors includes prominent names like Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, and Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, among others.

Mistral AI’s strategic partnerships, including distribution agreements with cloud providers like Microsoft Azure, underscore its commitment to making cutting-edge AI accessible to a broader audience. As the company aims to translate its engineering achievements into revenue, its ability to attract corporate clients will be closely watched in the coming months.
