Zuckerberg Introduces Meta’s AI Chatbot to Rival ChatGPT

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has introduced the company’s latest AI-powered assistant, Meta AI, in response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This AI assistant will be integrated into platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and eventually Meta’s mixed reality devices.

Zuckerberg shared that Meta AI relies on their extensive language model, Llama 2, and was developed in collaboration with Microsoft Bing to provide real-time internet information to users.

“Meta AI is your basic assistant that you can talk to like a person.”

Beyond answering questions and engaging in conversations, Meta AI can create images using a new tool called Emu. This tool was trained on a vast dataset of 1.1 billion pieces of data, including user-shared photos and captions from Facebook and Instagram.

Differentiating Meta AI from its competitor, ChatGPT, Zuckerberg emphasized their strategy of tailoring AI products to specific use cases. For example, Meta AI will have variations in different social media apps, offering unique functionalities. In a demonstration, it was shown how Meta AI could assist in organizing travel plans within group chats on Facebook Messenger.

Zuckerberg also highlighted the entertainment aspect of Meta’s chatbots, unveiling chatbots featuring around 30 celebrities like Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and Tom Brady.

Meta AI was made available on September 27 for a select group of users in the United States on platforms such as Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It will also be accessible on Meta’s smart glasses, set to launch on October 17 for U.S. users, and their new Quest 3 VR device.

On the same day as Meta’s Connect event, OpenAI announced an update for ChatGPT. It will no longer be limited to pre-2021 data, addressing the previous knowledge gap issue that AI models like GPT-4 faced. This update is immediately accessible for Plus and Enterprise users utilizing the GPT-4 model.
