Japanese Firm Metaplanet Embraces Bitcoin as Treasury Asset

Metaplanet, a publicly listed Japanese company focused on Web3 and metaverse-related enterprises, has announced the purchase of 1 billion yen ($6.5 million) of Bitcoin as a fundamental treasury asset. This move is similar to the method used by American conglomerate MicroStrategy.

Strategic Backing and Market Momentum

The decision to integrate BTC into its treasury assets was supported by Sora Ventures, UTXO Management, and notable figures like Mark Yusko and Jack Liu.

Jason Fang, founder of Sora Ventures, hailed Metaplanet as “Asia’s first MicroStrategy,” highlighting the opportunity for Japanese investors to access Bitcoin exposure without regulatory risk.

Since the announcement, Metaplanet has experienced significant market momentum, with its stock price soaring by 89%.

A Milestone in Digital Asset Adoption

Describing the move as a significant milestone, Metaplanet anticipates positioning itself as a pioneer in digital asset adoption in Japan. The adoption of Bitcoin as a treasury asset echoes the strategy employed by MicroStrategy, which has accumulated substantial BTC holdings over the years.

MicroStrategy’s Influence

MicroStrategy, a Fortune 500 company led by Michael Saylor, initiated the trend of integrating Bitcoin into its treasury reserves in August 2020.

Despite fluctuations in the market, MicroStrategy’s steadfast approach to Bitcoin investment has yielded substantial profits, with its BTC holding currently valued at over $15 billion.

A Motivating Force

Saylor’s unwavering belief in Bitcoin as a treasury-hedging asset has inspired other publicly listed companies to follow suit. He famously claimed to have influenced Elon Musk’s decision for Tesla to invest $1.5 billion in Bitcoin in January 2021, further solidifying Bitcoin’s status as a corporate treasury asset.
