Immutable Links with AWS in the Latest Web3 Gaming Push

Blockchain gaming company Immutable has entered into a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to broaden the opportunities available for game developers as the cloud service provider expands its startup accelerator initiatives. In a blog post published on October 10, Immutable revealed that AWS had included the company in its ISV (independent software vendors) Accelerate Program, an initiative where entities offer software solutions designed to run on or integrate with AWS.

Moreover, developers interested in creating projects on Immutable’s blockchain can now participate in AWS Activate. This program offers benefits such as technical support, training, and AWS cloud credits worth $100,000. AWS’s Head of Startups in Australia, John Kearney, described Immutable as a shining example of an Australian startup that has achieved global recognition. He also emphasized AWS’s dedication to fostering the development of Web3 games through its infrastructure.

Immutable has been developed using Amazon EventBridge and AWS Lambda, both serverless services that employ events to interconnect various application components. This technological foundation has empowered the platform to enhance its scalability to manage a tenfold increase in partnered games, as stated in the announcement.

Previous concerns have been raised about the centralization of gaming and Ethereum, as well as the significant reliance on Amazon, which commands a substantial portion of the cloud services market.

Immutable’s Product Marketing Lead, Michael Powell, addressed some of these concerns, noting in an October 11 report to Fortune:

“A lot of blockchain purists are very big into the idea of decentralization and that everything has to be on-chain and that’s a massive deviation from where game developers actually build.” In August, Immutable initiated public testing of its zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) in collaboration with Polygon Labs.

According to the company, zkEVM will reduce development costs for game developers while preserving the security and network effects associated with the Ethereum ecosystem. Immutable reached a valuation of $2.5 billion in March 2022 after securing $200 million in a Series C funding round led primarily by Singaporean state-owned investment firm Temasek.
