Gemini’s ‘Woke’ AI Disaster ‘Completely Unacceptable’: Pichai

Google CEO Sundar Pichai strongly criticized the Gemini AI chatbot for its controversial generation of “woke” versions of historical figures, deeming it “completely unacceptable” in an email to company employees. Pichai assured that Google’s AI teams are diligently addressing the issue, stating, “I know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias – to be clear, that’s completely unacceptable and we got it wrong.”

Pichai’s remarks came in response to the public outcry following Gemini’s disabled state last week. The chatbot sparked a social media storm by producing revisionist images, including Black Vikings, female popes, and “diverse” Nazi-era German soldiers, described as “absurdly woke.”

This incident resulted in a significant financial setback for Google, wiping out over $70 billion in market value within a single day. Pichai acknowledged concerns about potential bias and emphasized Google’s commitment to rectify the situation, recognizing that “No AI is perfect, especially at this emerging stage of the industry’s development.”

Gemini’s image debacle further eroded public trust in Google’s AI tools, occurring just after the company rebranded its chatbot and introduced the image generation tool. The controversy escalated as social media users unearthed past tweets by Google Gemini’s product lead, Jack Krawczyk, containing politically charged statements.

Gemini faced additional scrutiny for its text responses, notably refusing to condemn pedophilia and asserting a moral equivalence between Adolf Hitler and Elon Musk. Pichai assured that the company would take “a clear set of actions” in response to the crisis, involving “structural changes, updated product guidelines, improved launch processes, robust evals and red-teaming, and technical recommendations.”

The resolution of the problem is anticipated to take “a few weeks,” according to one of Google’s top AI executives. The situation underscores the challenges and responsibilities associated with AI development, particularly in navigating issues related to bias, public perception, and ethical considerations.

Google is grappling with the aftermath of the Gemini AI chatbot controversy, with Pichai addressing the concerns and outlining the company’s commitment to rectify the situation through comprehensive measures.
