In a groundbreaking move, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of international soccer, is set to introduce its nonfungible token (NFT) collection in partnership with blockchain firm Modex. The initiative will precede the highly anticipated 2023 Club World Cup scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia.
The announcement on December 11 revealed that the inaugural collection of 100 NFTs is slated to debut on December 15. Among the highlights of this exclusive collection is the opportunity for enthusiasts to secure tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. Additionally, an array of 900 digital collectables will be issued on the Polygon network and OpenSea later this month, showcasing memorable moments from the tournament and digital renditions of cherished memorabilia.
The FIFA Club World Cup, commencing on December 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will bring together seven of the world’s premier football teams, featuring champions from FIFA’s six confederations. The NFTs will be available on FIFA’s dedicated platform, FIFA+ Collect, launched in September 2022 and powered by Algorand.
Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Digital collectables increase how fans can interact with their favourite players, teams, and the game they love, and we’re honoured to support FIFA in realizing this goal.”
Since its inception, the FIFA+ Collect platform has orchestrated 11 NFT drops, minting 909,255 digital collectables held by 16,448 users. The platform has witnessed a substantial trading volume of $2.4 million across primary and secondary NFT markets. It’s worth noting that the platform distinguishes between packs obtained for free through challenges and those purchased with USDC.
This venture into the world of NFTs by FIFA marks a significant step in enhancing fan engagement and creating new avenues for interaction with the sport on a digital frontier.
