Coinbase Strengthens Global Advisory Council with Notable National Security Experts

Coinbase announced on Tuesday the addition of four national security experts to its Global Advisory Council, among whom is former U.S. Secretary of Defence, Dr. Mark T. Esper. The other appointees are Stephanie Murphy, a former congresswoman from Florida and former national security specialist at the Defense Department; Frances Townsend, the former Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Advisor to President George W. Bush; and David Urban, a lobbyist who previously served as a senior advisor to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and oversaw corporate affairs at ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company).

Coinbase has been entangled in efforts to establish legitimacy for crypto in the U.S. Currently contending with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding an unregistered securities dispute, the exchange quietly secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to facilitate customers’ buying and selling of crypto futures. In a statement, Coinbase mentioned that, with deep national security expertise, Esper, Murphy, Townsend, and Urban will aid the Council in examining the potential consequences of regulatory uncertainty for crypto in the United States, including its long-term economic and national security impacts.

These four individuals join former Senator Patrick Toomey (R-PA), former Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), former Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), Chris Lehane, Chief Strategy Officer at Haun Ventures, and John Anzalone, the founder of Impact Research Polling, on the council formed in May 2023. Senator Toomey made attempts to introduce his own crypto legislation in Congress before leaving at the beginning of the year, but he does not see any path forward for crypto-related legislation in this term.
