Children in the Metaverse: Opportunities and Challenges

The European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) has delved into the realm of the metaverse, shedding light on children’s safety in metaverse- its potential benefits and pitfalls.

According to EPRS policy analyst Maria Niestadt, the metaverse holds promise in nurturing children’s creativity, facilitating learning, and even aiding in medical recovery.

Virtual world technologies, as outlined by the EPRS, offer avenues for diagnosing and treating pediatric mental and physical health disorders, promoting physical fitness, and assisting in rehabilitation.

Moreover, immersive educational experiences immerse children in historical and cultural lessons while fostering positive social interactions.

Navigating Challenges in Child Metaverse Engagement

However, alongside these opportunities come significant challenges. The EPRS underscores the need to shield children from potential harm, including adverse effects on mental and physical health.

Concerns encompass social isolation, exposure to inappropriate content and communications, and physiological discomforts like nausea and anxiety.

A pivotal concern highlighted by the EPRS is the absence of standardized age regulations for metaverse engagement. Currently, VR headset manufacturers determine minimum age requirements, with tendencies observed towards lowering these thresholds. For instance, Meta (formerly Facebook) lowered its Quest headset’s minimum age from 13 to 10 years in 2013.

Navigating Legislation and Fostering Digital Literacy

In navigating the metaverse landscape, the European Union faces a balancing act between regulatory oversight and industry self-regulation. While regulators contemplate future strategies, they rely on private sector actors to adhere to existing laws and internal guidelines.

The European metaverse journey reflects an evolving narrative, marked by regulatory deliberations and the imperative to safeguard children’s well-being while fostering innovation and digital literacy.
