Greg Solano, co-founder of Yuga Labs and the driving force behind the immensely popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) nonfungible token (NFT) collection, has announced his return as chief executive officer of the startup. Solano, also known as “Gargamel,” revealed this development in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He expressed gratitude to former Yuga CEO Daniel Alegre while affirming the company’s commitment to advancing its BAYC-inspired Otherside virtual game, despite delays in its launch.
Yuga Labs, the brains behind BAYC, confirmed the accuracy of Solano’s announcement to Bloomberg but opted not to provide further comments on the matter.
BAYC holds the distinction of being the top-selling NFT collection on OpenSea, boasting a staggering $2.9 billion in sales volume, according to data from the NFT marketplace. During the crypto bull market, BAYC NFTs emerged as coveted status symbols, attracting attention from celebrities like rappers Snoop Dogg and Eminem. In 2022, Yuga Labs secured $450 million in funding at a valuation of $4 billion, solidifying its position as one of the crypto industry’s most valuable startups.
However, the company encountered turbulence amid controversy surrounding a token project and subsequent legal action from investors. Allegations surfaced that Yuga Labs and its celebrity endorsers had misled investors by promoting the tokens without disclosing payment arrangements. Furthermore, the 2022 crypto market crash dealt a blow to the NFT market, resulting in plummeting sales figures.
Daniel Alegre assumed the role of CEO at Yuga Labs in late 2022, transitioning from his previous position as chief operating officer at gaming behemoth Activision Blizzard. During his tenure, the company continued development on the Otherside game, which garnered mixed reviews for its trailer. Yuga Labs also expanded its gaming portfolio with titles like Dookey Dash, accessible exclusively to holders of certain NFTs.
As Solano takes the reins once again, all eyes are on Yuga Labs as it navigates through challenges and strives to maintain its prominent position in the ever-evolving landscape of NFTs and virtual gaming.
