Beloved ‘Doge’ Meme Star Kabosu Passes Away at 17

Kabosu, the Shiba Inu who became the beloved face of the legendary “Doge” meme and the Dogecoin (DOGE) cryptocurrency, passed away peacefully on May 24 at the age of 17.

Kabosu’s owner, Atsuko Sato, shared the sad news on her official blog. She expressed profound gratitude for the widespread love and support for Kabosu over the years. Sato announced a farewell party for “Kabo-chan” to be held on May 26 at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City.

Kabosu: Legacy in Meme and Crypto Culture

Kabosu first captured hearts worldwide in 2010 when Sato posted photos of her newly adopted dog on her blog. One particular image, showcasing Kabosu’s skeptical and curious expression, quickly went viral, birthing the “Doge” meme. This iconic image, often paired with phrases in broken English and Comic Sans font, became a cornerstone of internet culture.

The meme’s popularity skyrocketed in 2013 with the creation of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency featuring Kabosu’s image as its logo.

Initially conceived as a joke, Dogecoin evolved into a widely-used cryptocurrency that has funded numerous charitable initiatives, such as clean water projects and the Jamaican bobsled team.

A Community in Mourning

The news of Kabosu’s passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences from the crypto community and fans worldwide. Tributes and fond memories of Kabosu have flooded social media, highlighting her lasting impact on digital culture.

In December 2022, Sato informed the community that Kabosu’s health was in a “dangerous position”. This prompted overwhelming support from the Dogecoin community.

Moreover, Billy Markus, Dogecoin’s co-creator known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, urged followers to support Kabosu, leading one user to offer to cover any necessary expenses for her treatment.

Furthermore, Kabosu’s influence extended beyond memes and cryptocurrency. Her legacy has even touched political campaigns. For instance, U.S. President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign hired a “master of memes” to manage relationships with digital media companies and social media platforms.

Kabosu’s legacy as the face of crypto culture and meme innovation will continue to symbolize community spirit and inspire future generations.
