Base Blockchain Mints Inaugural NFT Single

Blockchain ecosystem Base, powered by Coinbase, has joined forces with blockchain music platform Sound.xyz. The collaboration, announced on Dec. 19, enables artists to mint music within the Base ecosystem.

Sound.xyz highlighted the advantages of Base being an Ethereum layer 2, offering lower gas fees for minting nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and faster transactions. This allows artists to upload and withdraw without the need to purchase crypto or bridge their funds.

The inaugural track, titled “Based,” was minted on Base by artists Reo Cragun and Heno, emphasizing blockchain themes in its lyrics. Sound.xyz sees the partnership as a significant move for the Web3 music scene, citing access to over 100 million users on the Base network. Music is considered a compelling entry point to engage “a whole new generation of users to get on-chain.”

In the evolving intersection of the music industry and Web3, major players are exploring blockchain-based releases. Thrash metal band Megadeth launched an NFT collection, while the late Michael Jackson had a studio demo released on the blockchain through Anotherblock.

The trend extends to legacy artists, with entrepreneur Cordell Broadus (Champ Medici) explaining the integration of legacy artists into Web3 using tools like blockchain and NFTs.

These developments signify the growing synergy between the music industry and blockchain, with artists leveraging NFTs and blockchain platforms to connect with fans in both physical and digital realms.
