Apple’s $5 Million Deal: Michael Lewis’ Book on SBF to Coincide with Trial

Multinational tech giant Apple has reportedly acquired the rights to author Michael Lewis’ upcoming book on former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) for a reported $5 million, following a competitive bidding process.

As detailed in a report on September 7 by The Ankler, Apple has secured the rights to the book titled ‘Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon,’ scheduled for release on October 3. Notably, this date coincides with the commencement of SBF’s trial in New York, a timing choice suggested by Lewis during his appearance at the Bitcoin 2023 conference in Miami. The book acquisition is not the sole project in the works, as a documentary directed by Nanette Burstein, known for her work on films about John McAfee and Hillary Clinton, is also reportedly underway.

SBF’s high-profile case, distinctive fashion sense, and unique hairstyle are expected to make him a subject of considerable interest for multiple documentaries. However, the progress of such films is uncertain due to ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America, the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. These unions are advocating for various industry-related issues, including streaming media residuals and the future implications of artificial intelligence in the entertainment sector.

The story of Sam Bankman-Fried had captured attention well before the downfall of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange and his subsequent arrest in the Bahamas. Initially seen as a rising star who oversaw substantial assets at Alameda Research and FTX, SBF was known for his unconventional attire. During court appearances, especially before his bail was revoked, he frequently appeared in formal business attire.

Notably, the crypto industry has seen an increasing number of documentaries featuring prominent figures and significant events, including Netflix’s “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King” on QuadrigaCX founder Gerald Cotten and another exploring the journey of Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong. Prior to the writer’s strike, there were also reports of a film in production concerning the relationship between Sam Bankman-Fried and Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.
